About This Treatment

A specialist in Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction and Breast Oncoplastic Surgery, Elena Prousskaia is available to perform breast implant removal in Bristol.

Also known as capsular contracture, breast implant removal surgery can be undertaken for a number of reasons, typically:

  • The patient has a desire to change the shape or size of the implants
  • The breast have changed because of weight loss or gain, age, childbirth or another factor
  • The implants have ruptured

Whatever the reason, whether it is forced through the failure of the existing implants or is to rectify unwanted changes in appearance, Elena has the experience and expertise to deliver the desired result.

Elena’s expertise means she is uniquely positioned to advise on breast implant removal.

A cosmetic surgeon for approaching 20 years, she has held leading Fellowships around the world, these including a prestigious Fellowship in breast reconstruction at Guys and St Thomas’ in London.

Elena’s expertise means she is uniquely positioned to advise on breast implant removal and then, where applicable, undertake any procedures at one of two superb Bristol facilities.

Key to the best surgical outcome is the consultation between patient and surgeon, this consultation needs to be thorough and enable the prospective patient to talk through why they want the surgery and their aims, what they hope the end result to be.

The surgeon would detail available options and between the patient and surgeon an approach agreed upon – this approach might of course be that surgery is not applicable.

Elena ensures that these consultation are incredibly detailed and they are often followed by a second consultation, this enabling the prospective patient to truly consider whether surgery is right for them.

Her ethos sums this approach up, as Elena says:

“The one thing that matters most to me when I am with a patient is empathy.

“It is only when you are able to identify and understand your patients problems that you can begin to help resolve them satisfactorily. A good surgical outcome is not the only thing that matters. Everything that you do and say to a patient has to come from your heart.”

For breast implant removal, the desired result is, of course, to rectify any issues that have arisen from the implants themselves or the scarring that occurs following the operation.

It is natural for there to be scar tissue formed following a breast implant procedure, but this can thicken and contract and make the breasts feel hardened and uncomfortable or even painful. The shape of the breasts can also become distorted.

The procedure can rectify issues with the scar tissue and also see the implants replaced or, if desired, removed.

One key aspect of this surgery is that it will often feel to a patient as if it is surgery that should not have been required, when they had the implants they might not have imagined then requiring further corrective surgery to rectify issues that arose.

Whether this need arises through natural body changes, or is the result of a sub standard initial procedure, the need for empathy and patient care is heightened. Elena’s manner and ease with dealing with patients, as well as her status as one of the leading female cosmetic surgeons, means the highest levels of patient carer are assured.

Implants should not break, they do not have an expiry date, if they have broken or ruptured this is likely to be the result of poor initial surgery. While of itself this is not a serious health risk, it can be truly distressing for the patient.

Elena’s patient care is rated as five stars, please take the time to read verified testimonials via the independent review sites below:

Breast Implant Removal Bristol – Key Information

Breast implant removal surgery can be undertaken at two superb Bristol facilities – Bristol Spire and Bristol Nuffield. Both are modern, well equipped private hospitals – further details for both are available on this site.

The surgery itself typically takes around an hour and is performed under general anaesthetic. A one night stay in hospital is usually required although on occasions the patient is permitted to go home on the day of the surgery.

During the initial stages of recovery – typically around 72 hours – some discomfort can be expected and painkillers will often be administered.

A period of rest is recommended for a week and a support bra worn for around six weeks. Patients will often benefit from taking two weeks off work while after four weeks a light gym programme focussing on lower body strength can be introduced.

As with all significant surgery, there would be post operative visits, with Elena checking the recovery is as expected and answering any queries the patient might have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast Reconstruction Surgery Recovery Time?

The length of your hospital stay depends on the type of operation and how your recovery progresses. For example, if you’ve had implants, the average length of hospital stay will be one night, however flap procedures require a stay of five to six days. After you have seen Ms Prousskaia for your four week follow, up you can then start to discuss your recovery plan going forward.

What Is The Aftercare?

The Elena Prousskaia Clinic prides itself on the quality of its aftercare so we’ll make absolutely sure you know what to expect, and how much rest is needed. We’ll give you specific instructions that may include how to care for your breasts following surgery, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection, and when to follow-up with Elena. Elena will also advise you on a specialised garment bra, which will also help with your recovery.

Are There Any Risks With Having This Procedure?

While complications with surgery are infrequent, no surgical procedure is without risks. Among the possible complications are scars, infection, haematoma, implant displacement, breast asymmetry, implant rupture and capsular contracture. Elena will provide you with further information with the risks and provide you with a detailed consent form during your consultations. This will help you to minimise the risks.

How Long Does Surgery Take?

Generally speaking breast reconstruction surgery timings may take from 2-8 hours, as this varies depending on the nature and complexity of the procedure.

Is Breast Reconstruction Painful?

After surgery it is normal to experience some discomfort, the level of which varies widely amongst patients. There is rarely prolonged pain unless there is a complication and in all cases you will be prescribed pain medication.

Will I Be Able To Wear A Normal Bra Afterwards?

You will wear your support bra for up to three months after surgery – then you can look at purchasing your own ‘normal’ bras for everyday wear once fully healed.

What Type Of Implants Are Used?

The shape of implants can be round or anatomical (teardrop). Both can provide an excellent result. The outer shell and the filling may vary depending on the manufacturer. Miss Prousskaia has never used PIP implants in her practice and she will offer you high quality implants from the best manufacturers. You will discuss with Miss Prousskaia which specific shape and size of implant would give you the optimal result. You should know that in the European Union (EU) 95% of implants used for breast augmentation are made of silicone gel and only 5% contains other type of fillings such as saline. Mentor Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants are devices with shells constructed from silicone elastomer. The shell is filled with MemoryGel®, Mentor’s proprietary formulation of silicone gel.

What Would My Expected Results Be?

Elena prides herself on taking the time to truly understand a patient’s aims and discussing what result will work best given the patient’s body shape and size. Although good results are expected, the body is not symmetric and almost everyone has some degree of unevenness, which may not be recognized in advance. The more realistic your expectations as to results, the better your results will be in your eye. You will have at least two consultations with Elena where she ensures that she meets your expectations and she will always try to achieve your desired results.

Can I Smoke Or Vape Before My Surgery?

Elena does not operate on patients that regularly smoke or vape. To be considered for this procedure you must refrain from smoking or vaping for 3 months before and after your surgery.
