Recovery At a glance

Recovering with support around you

Most patients recover from breast augmentation within four to eight weeks, returning to gentle activity soon after a one night hospital stay at our purpose built hospital in Bristol. Everyone heals a little differently, so think of the timelines here as a guide rather than a set of rules. Knowing roughly what to expect, and when, helps you plan your time off, arrange support at home and heal with confidence.

Elena and her team pride themselves on the quality of their aftercare. You will have a structured follow up at one, four and twelve weeks and again at one year, and you are always welcome to contact the team in between if anything worries you. You are never left to wonder on your own whether something is normal.

The first few days

You will usually stay in hospital for one night so that you can be looked after and monitored, and you will go home once any drains have been removed. It is completely normal to feel tightness, swelling and some discomfort across the chest in the early days, and you will be given pain medication to keep you comfortable. Your breasts will sit higher and feel firmer than their final result at first, which settles gradually over the following weeks as the implants drop into position.

Please arrange for someone to drive you home and, ideally, to stay with you for the first day or two. It helps to prepare in advance: loose front fastening clothing, everything you need within easy reach, and a little rest built into your days. Sleeping on your back, slightly propped up, is more comfortable and better for healing in the early weeks than sleeping on your side or front.

Week by week

When What to expect and what to do
Week 1 Swelling, bruising and tightness are normal. Rest as much as you can, wear your surgical bra at all times, avoid lifting and reaching above shoulder height, and arrange help at home. You will not be able to drive.
Weeks 2 to 3 Swelling begins to settle and bruising fades. Keep wearing your surgical bra and build up gentle movement. Many patients with a desk based job can return to work around now.
Weeks 4 to 6 Most swelling has gone and the breasts start to look more natural. You can usually return to work and to gentle exercise, but continue to avoid strenuous housework, heavy lifting and high impact activity.
Weeks 6 to 12 The implants settle into position and your shape becomes clearer. Heavier activity and weight lifting should wait until around eight to twelve weeks. Elena will guide your return to the gym, usually starting with lower body work.
3 to 12 months Any remaining swelling resolves, the scars continue to fade, and your final result becomes clear.

Most patients take around four weeks off work, depending on how physical their job is. As a rough guide, a desk based role may allow a return within one to two weeks, a lighter active job around three to four weeks, and heavier manual work six to eight weeks. It is sensible to avoid strenuous housework such as hoovering, along with dog walking, for at least four to eight weeks. Most patients are able to drive again after around one to two weeks, once they are off strong painkillers and can perform an emergency stop comfortably.

Your surgical bra, showering and dressings

You will wear a supportive, non wired surgical bra continuously for the first few weeks, as it supports the breasts while they heal and helps the implants settle. Elena’s team will advise you on when you can shower, how to care for your dressings, and when you can move to a softer everyday bra. Following this guidance closely makes a real difference to comfort and to how neatly you heal.

Returning to exercise

Gentle walking is encouraged straight away, as it helps your circulation and recovery. Light exercise can usually begin from around four to six weeks, with running and swimming a little later, and weight lifting and high impact sport left until eight to twelve weeks. The key is to reintroduce activity gradually and to listen to your body. Elena will give you tailored advice at your follow ups, as the right pace depends on your surgery and how you are healing.

Your scars

Any scars depend on the technique used and on how your body heals. Elena places incisions as discreetly as possible, most often in the crease beneath the breast where the scar is naturally hidden, and in most patients they fade to become almost invisible by the end of the first year. Scars go through stages, tending to look red or raised in the first few months before flattening and lightening over the following six to twelve months.

You can help them heal well by following your aftercare instructions, protecting them from the sun, keeping them moisturised, gently massaging them once fully healed, and not smoking. Silicone gel or sheets are clinically proven to help, and Elena will advise you on what is worth using and when to start.

What is normal, and when to call

Some swelling, bruising, tightness and changes in sensation are all a normal part of healing. It is always fine to contact the clinic for reassurance, and we would much rather you asked. Please do get in touch promptly if you notice increasing pain rather than steadily improving pain, marked swelling or redness on one side, a high temperature, or any discharge from a wound, as these are worth checking without delay. Elena’s team is there for exactly this.
